Modern sea shipping makes extensive use of containers to transport and store large quantities of cargo, but not all containers are created equal: different goods require different containers.

Whether you are just starting out in the world of sea shipping or you just need a refresher, let us give you an overview of what types of container you can choose and how to pick the one that meets your needs.

Standard shipping containers

At Global Shipping, we organize the shipment of some of the most common standard container sizes: the 20′ box, the 40′ box, and the 40′ high cube, which has a greater height than its standard 40′ box counterpart. These should be fine for any type of cargo that does not have any particular requirements in terms of temperature and ventilation, nor creates concerns on account of its great height or irregular shape.

Open top and flat rack containers

Not all goods are made to fit neatly into boxes, especially in the building industry, where certain kinds of machinery or pipes might be too high or irregularly shaped to be placed in a standard 20′ or 40′ box. This is where open top and flat rack containers come in: an open top container is a standard-sized container without a roof, covered with a tarpaulin to protect the merchandise from the weather. Because of its lack of roof and the presence of two collapsible sides, it offers the least protection from atmospheric conditions, but it is ideal for heavy weights or irregular shapes that would not otherwise fit.

Refrigerated containers

If your cargo is of a more delicate nature and risks being spoiled if the temperature is not maintained at a constant level, this is the solution for you. Refrigerated containers, known as reefers, come in the same standard sizes as other containers but with the possibility to control the internal temperature and keep it anywhere between -35 °C and +30 °C.

With this overview of the sizes of our sea containers we want to guide you in your choice. If you are still in doubt, we at Global Shipping will be glad to put our expertise at your service for any advice or clarification. So do not hesitate to contact our experts.
